Often regarded as the Beast of Twenty20 Cricket, Suryakumar Yadav is an Indian cricketer who plays for India and Mumbai Indians in the IPL.
Early Life:
Surya Kumar Yadav was born into a middle-class family on September 14, 1990. His father, Ashok Kumar Yadav, is currently working as an electrical engineer at BARC (Bhabha Atomic Research Centre), while his mother is a housewife. Surya’s family originally hails from Varanasi, but due to his father’s job, the family had to shift to Mumbai .
Education:
Surya received his primary education from the Atomic Energy Kendriya Vidyalaya. After this, Surya took admission at Atomic Energy Junior College and later at Pillai College of Science and Commerce, where he completed his graduation in B.com. Surya has been very fascinated with cricket and badminton since his childhood.
Early Cricketing Days:
Surya had been passionate about cricket since childhood. Seeing his passion for sport, his father enrolled him in a cricket academy at the age of 12. He was enrolled in the Alif Vengsarkar Academy, where Surya Kumar Yadav learned the basics of the game under the coachship of Dilip Vengsarkar.
Surya later played cricket at various levels in Mumbai. He played for Shivaji Park Gymkhana, Delhi Union Club (BPCL etc.
Suryakumar Yadav Domestic career:
Surya Kumar Yadav started his professional cricketing career on February 11, 2010, when he got the opportunity to make his debut for Mumbai against Gujrat in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. Surya scored 41 of 37 deliveries in his debut inning.
A few months later, he got another opportunity to make his Mushtaq Ali debut against Hyderabad. The batter failed to make his debut memorable as he was dismissed on a score of five runs. Later in the same year, he got the opportunity to make his first-class debut against Delhi. Surya made 73 of just 89 deliveries in his debut match.
Surya had a phenomenal Ranji Trophy season with the bat in 2011–12. The right-hander scored 754 runs in nine matches.
IPL Carrer:
His phenomenal performance in first-class cricket earned him a chance to feature in the IPL. Surya was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in the 2012 IPL auction for 10 lakh. Surya had planned to share the dressing room with the greats of the game, like Sachin Tendulkar,Lasith Malinga, Kieron Pollard, and Rohit Sharma; however, he did not get a chance to play a single match for the franchise.
Surya continued his form with the bat in the Ranji Trophy and domestic cricket, due to which he was picked by KKR in the 2014 IPL auction for Rs 70 lakh. He made headlines for his breathtaking innings of 46 in just 20 deliveries against the Mumbai Indians.
He played in lower middle order and became one of the vital cogs in their batting line-up. He was there in KKR’s setup for almost four years.
The breakthrough season: Suryakumar Yadav was picked up by the Mumbai Indians in the IPL 2018 and was slotted in the top order for the franchise. The batter made most use of the opportunities and scored 512 runs in that season for the Mumbai Indians. He played an important role in making the Mumbai Indians champions of the IPL 2019 and 2020.
Ahead of the 2024 auction, Surya Kumar Yadav was retained by Franchise for a whopping sum of 8 crores.
International cricket career:
•T20 cricket: Surya got the opportunity to represent India in 2021. On March 14, 2021, Surya made his Twenty20 debut against England. However, he did not get an opportunity to bat in his first international match. However, in the fourth match of the series, he got the opportunity for the first time. Surya opened his international account in style, scoring a six-over fine leg on the first delivery he faced in international cricket. Surya made 57 runs in his debut match.
The star batter became one of the biggest match winner for India in the shortest format of the game. On October 30, 2022, Surya was named the number-one batter in the ICC T-20 rankings.
Surya kumar Yadav has so far scored four hundred and seventeen half centuries in this format.
•One-day debut: Suryakumar Yadav made his Odi debut against Sri Lanka on July 18, 2021. Surya Kumar Yadav scored 31 in his debut match. However, like in Twenty20 cricket, Surya has not been able to replicate his performance in one-day cricket. So far, the batter has scored only four half centuries in 31 matches.
•Test Debut: On February 9, 2023, Surya got a chance to represent India in the longest format against Australia.
Personal Life:
Surya Kumar Yadav was married to Devisha Shetty on July 7, 2016. Devisha Shetty is a dance teacher by profession. Both of them met in college in 2012 and became friends. After some time, they gradually fell in love with each other and started dating.
After dating Devisha for four years, the couple decided to tie the knot in 2016. Suryakumar Yadav has so far had no son or daughter from his wife.

In IPL 2020, in a match between Royal Challengers Bangaluru and Mumbai Indians, RCB’s skipper Virat Kohli tried to sledge Surya Kumar Yadav; however, Sky did not respond to Virat but helped his team win the match by remaining not out. Later on, he made the gesture, “Don’t worry, I am here.“
